Here in Finland we have some of the highest taxes in the world and in general alcohol is expensive. As such it can be surprising how amazingly affordable many blue chip wines can be in good restaurants in the center of Helsinki. This majestic bottle of Riesling is a good example of that as it cost 100€ less taxes included than the Wine-searcher ex-tax global average in a place that isn’t even well known for their wine pricing. Even without any context it was simply fantastic and I am dying to try more Keller GGs. The Kirchspiel cost the same so I guess I need to go try that next.

2018 Weingut Keller Hubacker Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Rheinhessen (26.3.2022)
The nose is bright and incredibly precisely defined. Super pure with notes of lime, nettle, yeast/sponti and chalk for days. On the palate the wine is microchiselled and linear, as firm as it gets. It is nervous with practically no weight. It is concentrated yet with only 12.5% ABV. Extremely crisp and electric with impeccable balance and terrific length. For me this is the highest level of dry Riesling.
