TN: 2018 Quinta de Saes Dão Reserva Estagio Prolongado (Portugal, Beiras, Dão)

Some time ago @Otto_Forsberg spent a week or so in Portugal touring wine regions with a few other wine geeks. After he returned he waxed poetic about Alvaro Castro’s Quinta da Pellada in Dão and practically forced me and some others to order wines from the winery. I was mildly interested so decided to try this one plus one of the top wines. Now I never regret anything in this life but this turned out to be so tasty that I wouldn’t mind having more in the cellar. In addition to clearly top notch winemaking I think it speaks of the field blend tradition, showcasing an interesting range of ripeness as far as the fruit go. There is great brightness and vitality to it too, pretty singular style overall.

A very attractive nose that showcases a cool savory blend of dark - partially pitch black - and red fruits, riper and less ripe tones. Somewhat earthy without being rustic, with some toasty and floral notes, a hint of bouillon and some rust too. Quite much going on here but nothing really dominates. On the palate it is medium-bodied and almost airy in style, a real ballerina. Very refined, it sports tremendously tasty, just ripe fruit and a nice tannic grip and has no rough edges. There is quite a bit of power hidden behind the very elegant exterior which is appropriate for a wine coming from a region called ”The Burgundy of Portugal”. Beautifully textured with a finish that goes on and on.
