2018 Nervi-Conterno Gattinara Vigna Molsino - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara (12/7/2023)
The nose is immediately expressive, with cherry and pomegranate fruits and some earth and mint. The palate is savoury and tight. With air, cherry fruits sweeten at the heart. It has moderate tannin and beautifully crisp, minerally acidity that hold everything in check. It is an '18 that will require plenty of cellar time to show at its best, but I like it very much now. It builds and holds in the mouth, without being overbearing or heavy.
Thanks for posting! Honestly I’m a bit surprised you don’t hear more about these wines when the quality level is so high right now and the prices still pretty reasonable.
I found this tighter than you did a few weeks ago and back in March, but both at restaurants where the time to follow it was limited. Nonetheless, the texture - the combination of density and finesse, concentration and lightness - suggests greatness. At the winery in 2021, this was really open so I think it’s just clenched up.
The '19s are going to be really tight wines in need of time, but the '20 Gattinara which is out in Italy and should be available in the U.S. soon is a really radiant wine that seemed promising for the long haul but easy to drink already.
