First Fourrier (well, sorta; this is ~50/50 estate & purchased fruit from what I’ve been able to suss out).
Really sappy, dense red fruits that are definitely weightier than your average Bourgogne. Touch of violet. Mouth-coating tannins, but still quite fresh with some spice notes emerging after an hour or so of air. A bit of smoky gravelly mineral quality, too. Gourmand, fleshy, “easy-drinking”, and just downright tasty. For the price, though, not sure it’s a re-buy.
I really like Fourrier bourgognes. For me they perfectly capture the house style at a better price point. I haven’t tried the 2018 yet, but it sure sounds like a 2018. Welcome to the new normal.
Many in burgundy consider climate change as a minor miracle for the region. They are probably right and fleshy 2018 will be a far easier sale than acidic 2008. But I can find fleshy Pinots the world over…
Having read that Fourrier’s house style is pretty giving and generous year in and year out, I wasn’t surprised to find this very much in that wheelhouse. Not sure how much to ascribe that to the 2018s but I am approaching the vintage with caution.
I haven’t tasted the 2018s from Fourrier yet and generally buy the GC AC and some of the domain 1ers, but I’ve found over the years that I prefer his style in less ripe vintages…not sure we’ll see too many of those moving forward w/climate change.
