TN: 2018 Henri et Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain Sous La Velle Blanc

I have pretty much given up on this vintage in Burgundy but as I like the producer and CT notes seemed promising I decided to give this one a try. It also seems like there are more and positive 2018 notes, no? While this bottle turned out to be very drinkable it is still by far the weakest I’ve had from this address and doesn’t make me think any different. Still, I have great trust in Buisson and applaud them for the successful label update.

The nose is at once fruity (white peach, apricot, lemon) and of secondary notes (wood, smoke, popcorn and vanilla). Pretty complex and detailed, not bad at all. On the palate it comes off as medium-bodied and soft. The acidity seems to be on the low side yet there is crispness to the fruit that creates this sense of structure on the finish. There is also attractive airiness that give the wine a light-handed feel. The flavor profile is altogether savory with some oaky smokiness and iodine. It is immensely enjoyable and food-friendly with not a lot of weight. I would definitely prefer higher acidity but accept the vintage’s limitations and feel like the winemaker has succeeded here all things considered.

thanks very much for posting this Ilkka. Continuing to lightly track what’s going on in Saint-Romain. Price point, if i can ask?

I’m not Ilkka, but 30-35€, I believe.

I am getting these for around $50 in California.

Good thing I have Otto to cover for me at those moments when the baby allows me to sleep at night :grinning:

Indeed 31€ was this one. Seems to be an increasingly rare price point for a village wine from a good producer.
