2018 Black Sheep Finds Syrah The Joy Fantastic- USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills (12/28/2021)
Is it Holus Bolus? Is it The Joy Fantastic? What’s up with the Black Sheep thing?
Anyway, thanks to an interview in the Bedrock Wine Conversations podcast I grabbed a mixed case of Amy and Peter’s wines. Half a bottle in I am thrilled I did. This is meaty, smoky, deeply fruity Syrah that hits all the right notes for me. From very young vines, it still conveys great depth in the mid-palate, and a sappy yet fully tannic finish. I bought two bottles of this specific wine, and wish I had bought six to follow over time.
If I remember right, Black Sheep Finds is just the LLC / Produced and Bottled By entity. Could be wrong there.
The Joy Fantastic is their home vineyard, which is just east of Domaine de la Cote’s property. Kind of an extension of the same ridgeline, but with a southwest facing aspect.
Holus Bolus captures I think most of the other wines, and then Hocus Pocus is the second label (?). Haven’t seen Hocus Pocus in a while though.
They make such lovely wines! One of my favorites in CA.
Peter and Amy are two of the sweetest folks you’ll meet in the wine business, and down to earth as well. Amy is an MS who has worked for Kermit Lynch for quite some time; Peter worked in wine retail in LA I believe before making the move up to my area.
I find there wines to be ‘delineated’ examples of the varieties they work with and the sites they pull from - by this, I mean that there is purpose and focus in each one, something I strive to achieve in my own wines.
You should follow them on social media - they’re a hoot to watch, and Amy REALLY digs Prince and that comes out often!
We’ve drunk quite a bit of the regular Holus Bolus Syrah over the past several years as my wife and daughter loved the octopus and we found that the wine was quite good. Then in the last two years the single vineyard wines started showing up locally. They are really good. I’m going to age some of those.
If you join their wine club, it will be $42.50, plus tax+shipping. Their club enables customers to customize their shipment, as long as a minimum bottle count/price total is reached per shipment. Pretty reasonable–a mixed case over the year of one’s choosing if you like the producer is not a bad idea.
