TN: 2017 Terre Nere Brunello di Montalcino - scary to be the 'first' to write a TN on CT

I find it a bit disconcerting to be the first tasting note on any wine (in CT), wondering why there are no notes when there are some bottles consumed, and, with this wine, I still wonder why there are no notes, as it’s quite delicious! At first it starts out all super dusty and sharp tannins, and the fruit seems quite unripe - wine comes across rough, disjointed, and lacking interest of any sort. It quickly blooms in the glass, developing a beautiful herbal nose, touch of vegetables and slight black cherry. Texture is nicely weighted, smooth but lifted and made lighter by the acids - those sharp, dusty tannins seem to meld in now. Finish is more dark cherry, tree sap, good length to it. Quite a wonderful wine for the price, will be pairing it with (leftover) short rib ragú

I have to admit, words like “unripe”, “herbal” and “vegetables” are not something I’d expect to see in a tasting note on Brunello! While I can believe the wine can be great in its own right, that doesn’t really sound like a wine showing great sense of typicity.

I think with a Brunello that young I’d be decanting it for the best part of a day!

Understood, and note the ‘unripe’ was just at first opening - not what the wine was supposed to show, obviously - I just like outlining the development with air. It fleshed out quickly, and significantly.

I think herbal is quite common with Sangiovese, but your mileage may vary.

It’s a very young wine, but I have several so I wanted to pop one. I do have half a bottle remaining that should show more of what ‘is to come’ with the wine, how it will develop.

Another very enjoyable bottle tonight - I really am not sure why there are not more of these listed in either inventory or notes in CellarTracker. Beautiful florals on the nose, in particular - herbal, spicy, really nice wine, great with bolognese as well
