My first Sandhi - I’m super impressed by the tightrope-like balance of classic Chardonnay character with the focus, mouthwatering acidity, & freshness on display here. Sea-spray saline quality, and a lemony citrus spine that runs start to finish through the wine.
A lovely pairing with the cacio e pepe I made tonight, the leftover dishes from which I will likely be scrubbing furiously until this bottle is empty and may warrant the opening of another.
It was really delicious and straightforward, but also extremely geared to palates like mine. I wouldn’t be shocked to read that people who prefer richer or more unctuous expressions of Chardonnay find it OUT of balance.
I like this wine too, it’s better than the Santa Barbara bottling. Here is my note on the 2015:
A compelling wine that is almost like a stylistic caricature of what it wants to be (French) rather than the real thing. A textural wine, the acidity is rounded off a bit, but you get a pretty generous and leezy mid palate with some ginger and prickly spice. Not too much cream. I enjoyed it. Forced is not the right word, the best comparison I have is like a good Elvis impersonator.
It’s definitely clear what it’s trying to emulate, but I always try to avoid using the “B-word” when it comes to new world Chardonnay or Pinot and try to judge it on its own merits (or lack thereof). Still, it is hard to avoid the comparison, especially given who’s making the wine.
I’d really like to try their other bottlings, especially the single-vineyard ones.
