TN: 2017 Quivet Syrah - Compare and contrast.

  • 2017 Quivet Cellars Syrah Whole Cluster Kenefick Ranch - USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga (3/28/2019)
Just arrived yesterday. This wine has more spice and less plush fruit than the Las Madras I opened yesterday. I suspect that is a function of the whole cluster ferment. This is more rough around the edges than yesterday’s wine, but still outstanding with red fruits - cherry, raspberry and perhaps plum to go with the spice. Put the next one away for 4 years. • 2017 Quivet Cellars Syrah Hulda Block Las Madres Vineyard - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros (3/27/2019)
Just arrived from the winery. 100% syrah. Brought to lunch with client in case he wanted to have some. Pop, decant and pour. This is a plush, fruit driven wine. Will compare with the Kenefick, which is whole cluster. Palate is fruit, red fruit, cherry and plum and raspberry. A tiny bit of pepper, but not a lot. Ready for business now. Tastes quite delicious. This is a modern California wine a la Mike Smith. He says it’s cold climate syrah. Not sure if that explains the fact that this is fruity and not spicy. (92 pts.)
