TN: 2017 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot

  • 2017 Domaine Thomas Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (3/7/2024)
I've been loving my 2017 Chablis as of late, so I thought I'd venture into white Burgundy a bit, see how the vintage plays out there. While not quite as perfectly situated (to me) as '17 Chablis, there's a lot to love...nose has a very strong salinity to it, white flowers and sweet light tropical fruits. Palate is starting to bear some silkiness, bit of weight, white peach, sweet pineapple, key lime - all the components meld together well, giving a preview of what this wine will be when it hits its peak, but what makes it most obvious, to me, that it's not quite there is the finish, where it still bears some baby fat, some malo and vanilla which hasn't yet fully integrated. That said, perfectly enjoyable now - complex, interesting, very nice - gives me hope for the few other bottles I have, which I'll happily open in a couple more years, or later.

Hi Todd, we import the Thomas Morey wines into Australia. Thomas makes a very elegant version of Morgeot and that '17 is a beauty. He is an excellent winemaker with outstanding holdings. We had his '17 Batard in a very strong night of Batard, Criots and Bienvenues recently, and it was one of the wines of the night. His Bourgogne Blanc is worth seeking out too.

kind regards
Jeremy

Wow, jealous, for sure!

I saved half the bottle for tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to it, as my last sip (2 hours later) was the best of all…

I got a couple of those at Berserker Day last year, but haven’t opened one. We did just have his '19 Bâtard last week and it was very good, nice weight if not quite as chiseled as a better vintage.

WUT!?

Those were on sale on BerserkerDay 14? Dammit!! I never get to see the actual stuff for sale!

If you’re drinking Chablis, you’ve already ventured into white Burgundy. T. Morey’s Bourgogne, as Jeremy indicated, is a great wine, that provides a good sense of the domaine. Looks like you had a really nice Morgeot.

Understood, but just as they are marketed and made differently, I wanted to differentiate as such - Chablis is rarely confused with ‘white Burg’

Looking forward to trying the other 1/2 bottle tonight!
