2016 Mayacamas Vineyards Merlot - USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder (10/26/2025)
Last bottle of a sixer...this one is still rockin the barrel sample extraction...crushed cherries and raspberries...grandma's wild berry jam...graphite dry extract...dusty and savory crushed rocks...sandalwood spice, eating your #2 pencil in class...some edgy briar patch...but for the most part...SMOOTH as silk panties! The spices and the florals are intoxicating...interplay of wild mountain terrain, and regal elegance creates such a wonderful balance...a warm caress by a raging fire...might be getting carried away here...so....LOVE this wine...would put most $200+ Napa cabs to shame! I haven’t had any Mayacamas in a long time. Do you find any difference in style from the Travers era? Really loved them in the past but haven’t tried any from after the sale.
When did the regime change at Mayacamas? I forget.
That said, I have LOVED the Merlot for quality and value for years. One of those - hope no one finds out about this one type of wines.

Amazing Buzz note per usual! Havent had a Mayacamas Merlot in a long time but this makes me want to grab one.
And eating your #2 pencil in class is an awesome descriptor.
Granted I usually opted for the glue, but the pencils were always a solid second choice

The sale happened in spring of 2013. Not sure how much has changed. There was quite a bit of talk about keeping the soul the same but modernizing the cellar…but then again, I think Andy Erickson was brought in to make the wines.
