TN: 2016 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne Selezione

  • 2016 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne Selezione - Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (7/25/2025)
The wine has a lovely pale gold color, with a nose of overripe summer fruit, honey, subtle warm spices (allspice/cardamom?) and some VA, all enveloped with the feel of air after a thunderstorm. Dense on the palate, the wine tastes of nuts, some bitter caramel and heavily bruised apple, along with a nice seam of acidity. This wine was best after decanting and warming for about 30 minutes, but enjoyable across the spectrum of temperatures. For me, this oxidative style was taken to just the right place but not overdone. Perfectly balanced at 12% ABV; this is an excellent wine.

I loved this wine, and was even more surprised to see only ~20-40ish bottles per vintage on CT, with limited notes. Perhaps the oxidative style is not for everyone, but don’t miss out on this wine as it is made with finesse. Trebbiano seems to be very amenable to oxidative winemaking based on my (very) limited experience with this wine and the Monteraponi trebbiano.
