TN: 2016 Domaine Guiberteau - Saumur Blanc "Brézé" (France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur)

2016 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc Brézé - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur (7/12/2024)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a few hours –

NOS: rich; buttery a bit; light mineral; medium-light oak; sesame crisp crackers; not oxidized; expressive.

BODY: fairly rich golden yellow color — dark enough to be worrisome; medium-full to full bodied.

TASTE: richly-flavored; medium oak; clearly a white-Burg type of Chenin — blind, there’s a very good chance I call white Burg. on this; medium+ to high acidity; glycerine mouthfeel; 13% alc. hidden; a touch citric – orange oil, but this is not a “bright, Sauv. Blanc-leaning” Chenin, nor is it an “old school” hay/lanolin/beeswax Chenin, either. I like it. Drink or Hold.

I just had a 2022 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Blanc, Breze “Midi”, Chenin Blanc. Definitely needs time and air, and not enough weight for my linking. Certainly no oak, nor oxidative or lanolin flavors. I liked it but… it was not what I was looking for. Need to learn to read the labels when buying on a whim as the “Clos De Midi” - by all (confusing) accounts is more interesting.

Way weird! I tried their “Clos David” recently. Thought it was low-level excellent, despite it not being quite my style. Let us know how you get on with the Clos de Midi if you try it.
