Another vintage, another killer bottle of Turley Old Vines. I honestly think the quality of these keeps improving every year. Explosive brambly nose and higher toned raspberries, cinnamon, and pepper on the palate. Medium ++ bodied with plenty of acidity (more then previous years I feel like), and a nice complex midpalate. No heat, but a slightly clipped finish is my only slight ‘complaint’…but that’s really nitpicking as this was damn tasty. Excellent wine and really strong value.
Did you purchase direct from the winery or at retail?
Yep, the Old Vines and Juvenile bottlings - usually at $25 per - at true values indeed and always seem to over-deliver.
Cheers.
Snagged this one at retail. $30, so not too much over list-price (I don’t think).
Really happy with this one. Surprised how well it was drinking right out of the bottle at PnP
I think Turleys are very good values.
Just got my spring allocation and couldn’t resist opening the‘16 Juvenile…very good for the price point.
Nice Bill! Juveniles are just so damn easy to drink. I especially loved the 14’s.
Out of curiosity, what is the list price of the Juvenile and the Old Vines?
From the winery:
'16 Juvenile - $20 (Literally a steal…wish I purchased more)
'15 Old Vines - $25
I had the '15 Old Vines and the '15 Juvenile together on Friday night. I love the Juvenile but the Old Vines was a bit deeper. Both are great values.
Thanks Bill. Such good deals on both.
Not sure how they do it…but my wine storage place was able to offer me an allocation of 16 Juvenile for $21. Would have to think they make more than a dollar or two per bottle.
I like both, but the Old Vines is worth the extra $5, to me.
Timely note, I blindly reached up on the top shelf of the cellar tonight and pulled a ‘15 Old Vines. Of the past few vintages I find this one to have the most ripe red fruit up front in a Carlisle kinda way. 2015 was pretty fruit forward vintage in California overall. Very enjoyable.
Thanks for the note as it motivated me to pull one from the rack. I agree with your note. Red fruit and certainly fruit forward, good midpalate and yes a somewhat of a short finish. Good change of pace for us and enjoyable, but we give a slight edge to a board favorite that has more black/blue fruit, spice and overall structure.
Thanks for the tasting note, Rich!!
WOW, look at how light the color is!
I have only tasted the Turley Old Vine Zinfandel, never the “Juvenile”, even though the “Juvenile” appears to receive more praise on the board…
I had a glass of the 15 juvenile yesterday which was fantastic. Picked up a bottle of the 16.
The 16 Juvenile is fantastic wine. I opened one last Tuesday and just finished last night. It was finally drinking best’s best after being open 5 days.
Day one the wine was closed, showing little fruit and just kind of plain. Each day it got a little better.
Putting the other 6 bottles away and going back to the 14 juvi for spring bbq.
Nice, thanks for the look at the 16 Juvi Chuck! Sounds like I’m better off letting them sit for a bit and sticking to the 15’s.
And the 14 Juvi is an awesome wine. Wish I would have been able to save a few. Went through em so damn fast.
