2015 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling Dry Eden Valley- Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley (5/21/2016)
Ding Ding Ding we have a winner! My official 2016 summer white will be the 15 Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling. For $14, one gets a wine of pleasure, refreshment, and even a little personality to boot. The palate shows a really nice interplay of traditional Riesling fruits such as green apple and peach spliced with thirst quenching fresh pressed lime juice. A few more sips in, one get a feel for just a touch of a richness, but with a solid back bone and acid structure, and plows ahead with little effort on a precise and clean finish. Off the charts QPR. (91 pts.)
I also opened a bottle of this today to sip on while grilling some steaks outside and totally agree, a great little wine and a total bargain at the price paid. I could smell this wine all day, beautiful nose. First bottle I’ve had from this producer and I’m impressed. I’ll pick up a few more for the summer.
I also think this is a great value, and that’s coming from someone who almost exclusively drinks German and Austrian Rieslings. Maybe I just hadn’t discovered the right producers, but it seems like entry level Clare and Eden Valley Riesling has come a long way in the past few years. I remember a time when almost every bottle I tried was highly reductive and overridden with TDN. That’s far from the case now.
I cannot tell you how happy this comment makes me. My experiences with “bargain” Aussie Riesling circa 2003 were not very pleasant. I stumble upon TN’s these days and I feel like I need to give them another go.
I have enjoyed some $20+ bottles that are 5+ years old. I am specifically referring to the possibility of enjoying a young, inexpensive one…
I was going to add that the real bummer of the Aussie wine fall out in the US is the lack of quality Rieslings like this that can be bought locally and consumed shortly thereafter. Yes, I can order online, but that’s a hassle, not to mention expensive when one factors in shipping. This wine, Pikes, Grosset Hill and a few others are still around, just harder to source. Anyway, glad others feel this is as killer a deal as I fully intend to go get a case of this,
That’s about the price we’d pay for it in Australia so it is priced pretty competitively. If I was asked to recommend a readily available, high QPR Riesling here in Australia, I’d most likely go with this, Pikes or Jim Barry as they are super reliable. There are others that that I’d prefer if buying for myself, but I’m always happy to drink these ones.
