TN: 2015 Dark Matter Zinfandel, Howell Mountain

2015 Dark Matter Zinfandel, Howell Mountain. So I’m a pretty big zin fan and I’ve been wanting to try Dark Matter for a while now, but it’s always been a bit…'cost prohibitive '. Finally found a decent deal at auction so I pulled the trigger. Honestly, because of the egregious pricing, I wanted to hate it. But it’s a solid zin! A really good zin even! Dark fruits, cinnamon, plenty of acidity, and well balanced overall (tiny bit of heat on the finish if I’m nitpickin). I’m really liking it! But…is it woth literally 2X to 3X some of my favorite zins (Bedrock, Carlisle, Bucklin, Sky, Hartford, etc)? No. No it most definitely is not. Glad i had a chance to try it…but I would absolutely never pay retail price for this wine, which for the record, is $115 a bottle (sold in 3-packs) for members, and $125 a bottle for non-members (again, only sold in 3-packs).

Nice! I usually find Napa zins to have that hot finish, and they’re blowsy. The opposite of a dusty Dry Creek Valley zin. Good to hear there’s more to try, though I’m not sure I’d drop that coin.

Yep, im with ya! Id usually lean Dry Creek if choosing between the two. And while this was a good zin …it is most definitely not worth the retail price.
