TN: 2015 Bucklin Ancient Field Blend Old Hill Ranch

  • 2015 Bucklin Ancient Field Blend Old Hill Ranch - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (3/22/2022)
Double decanted an hour before dinner, this brought the lush, but also kept its form. Ripe berry fruit, Zin spice, warm herbs and a penetrating, minty finish puts this in a nice spot right now. The tannins are in balance with the fruit, and while it no doubt can age further there is no need. Like a number of 2015 Zin-based blends, it’s in a good place.

Definitely a winner, David. I drank my last bottle a few weeks ago and wish I had more. Certainly has plenty of time left.

Huge fan of this winery! Spoke to Will Bucklin about a week ago and ordered approx 18 bottles.

I only had one that came in a 3-pack with bottles from two other vintages. Wish I had more!

Awesome note David! I’ll look to open a 2015 soon based on your praise!

I’ve only got '16s-'19s left at this point. After having a great bottle of the '13 at age 5, I signed up and decided that I needed to buy and cellar at least a handful of these every year. I should probably buy more, but I say that about too many wines. Have to (try to) draw the line somewhere.

Yes. Quantities become unreasonable at some point. I am shooting for Old Hill horizontals covering Bucklin, Once & Future and Bedrock from 2018-2021 before I put on the brakes.

Seems like a good goal, and should allow for some fun comparisons in a few years.

Opened this tonight and Wow! Other than I had it PnP, @David_Bu3ker notes above is spot on. I really should be buying more Bucklin.

Such a great wine! Just opened one a couple weeks back that was unfortunately heat damaged (bad luck because i purchased it on release directly from Will), but i still have one left!

How did it get heat damaged?

One of lifes great mysteries Philip, ha!

It must have happened when it was shipped from the winery, as i was fortunate enough to hang out with Will over at Old Hill and purchsed the bottles from him while i was there. Hoping my last one survived the ‘journey’ from CA to AZ a little better!

Popped another one tonight and luckily, it was much better than my last bottle which definitely had heat damage (or some sort of flaw). Dusty blue and black fruits, spice, and a distinct savory element. There’s plenty of acidity here which creates a nice mouth-feel, but a tiny bit of heat on the finish the knocks it down a few pegs. A very structured, old-school style Zinfandel that I really like. Drink now and over the next 10 years.
