TN: 2014 WillaKenzie Estate Pinot Noir Kiana (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley)

  • 2014 WillaKenzie Estate Pinot Noir Kiana - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (10/23/2017)
Medium ruby with cedar nose. Dry, light oak with subdued fruit, not in the general fruity class of WK wines on night one. Much more retrained with more acid and oak. Where most of the '14s are quite delicious with the chewy fruit, this one is taking AFWE to a new level. Back in the bottle for another night. OK on night two, we have a wine to drink. Still a bit restrained, but the chewy fruit and tannins with a medium body are delivering tart cherries with a steely mineral, some brambles, cane tannins, balsam and developing a richness with a little edge. Just give some time or plenty of air. Went from a charitable 85 on night one to 91. (91 pts.)

Grandpa G I feel like your impatience in holding onto wines is becoming legendary. The bottle probably needed at least a few more years in the cellar, don’t you think? Is this a ‘try one’ hold onto two of five for later kinda thing?

Scott, This old geezer doesn’t have time to wait. Not quite a Pobega yet, but the '14s have been so good young, I thought let’s give it a try. This one was a bit baby killing, but I just have a glass a night and give it time and open something else. I just get WK club shipments now, but have been pleased with where the wines are going. Oh yeah, '14, sorry, everyone says those drink well young. My bad.
