TN: 2014 Wendouree Cabernet Malbec

  • 2014 Wendouree Cabernet Malbec - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/27/2023)
Sealed under screwcap and drinking right in the zone. There's a core of briary, sweet fruits. It has a hint of earth and truffle development. There's a touch of mint and eucalypt too. It is juicy, luscious and layered and cut by breezy acidity. Tannins are ripe and the finish is long. Kept getting better and better in the glass.

Isn’t this borderline infanticide? Or is there a stylistic change which would allow for earlier drinking? Plus everyone has their own idea of when a wine is ready.

Edit: Asked theoretically since my chance of drinking any Wendouree until I die a natural death is 0.01%.

rarely see this around here. I have a couple bottles I’d love to open but they are young. Nice note.

Hi Marc,

around the 10 year mark is about right to start drinking them. This '14 will go for another 2-3 decades under screwcap.

cheers
Jeremy

Any recent takes on the '05? A single bottle is my entire Wendouree stash.

Hi Keith,

I had the '05 about 4 years ago and it was brilliant. Should be singing now.

cheers
Jeremy

Love Wendouree…I drank through a six pack of the 97 Cab Malbec between 2005-2012, all were fantastic. Wendouree used to show up on Winebid in the US for very reasonable prices but the word got out, alas. Would love a chance to try these wines again someday!

We’re pouring the 16 by the glass at the moment. Also drinking quite well, albeit young.
They become a bit more approachable as young wines in the mid 90s.
