TN: 2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest

  • 2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (1/27/2024)
This was opened and decanted two hours before being poured at the table. Opened to pair with a first course of seared sea scallops with sauteed fennel and leeks in a saffron/fennel pollen/carrot broth with an orange/fennel frond/parsley gremolata. One friend, a very experienced white burgundy drinker, guessed it was a dry German riesling, which I found odd until I poured out the tiny bit leftover the next evening (to celebrate the Chiefs winning the AFC championship!!!) and observed the aromas of riesling myself. (He was stunned when I showed him the bottle.) Anyway, this showed as very young and only opened a bit near the end of the course as the end of the initial pour was tasted. Probably a great wine, but one that needs a few more years to show (assuming your bottles aren't poxed - this was the first of mine that I've opened and it was not).

Thanks for the note, Maureen. I actually pulled this same bottle out of storage last week (first btl from a mixed case of '14 Dauvissat) but ended up opening an '11 instead. The '11 showed well (young but approachable, improving over 2 hours)… maybe I’ll put the '14 back for now.

Thanks very much for the tasting note. It seems like a lot of the '14s right now are in a somewhat awkward phase. I have a '14 Les Preuses that I’ve been holding onto. I can only imagine this needs even more time. Very glad to see some notes from the same producer, same vintage at the 1er Cru level.

Useful update, maureen. I’ve had some wonderful '14’s (Billaud-Simon Vaudesir, Samuel Billaud Sechet), but have been trying to keep my hands off of my remaining Dauvissat, as I know there will be further development of bottles that survive.

Christian Moreau’s Les Clos has been terrific both times I have opened it in the past year. As has Louis Michel’s Vaudesir.

Thnx for the note Maureen, i have a few bottles of this. Your comment on premox resonates. 2017 was my last vintage of buying Dauvissat for this reason

Excellent note Maureen, Dauvissat’s la Forest is one of my new favorite things. @Greg_K shared a 13’ before new year’s and it knocked me out. Had the 19 later at dinner, also good.

had this a couple years ago and it was stunning. I should check in again.

Isn’t this a different producer than Vincent? Too many Dauvissats in Chablis. There is also Jean/Fabian Dauvissat.

No. While the labels differ, the wines are identical between Vincent Dauvissat and Dauvissat-Camus.

Good to know. Thanks

Thanks for the note! I had this wine recently, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would agree that it showed a little young but not in a bad way. Searing acidity, underpinned by an omnipresent limestone bench of minerality and very complex. I tend to gravitate towards high acid wines and Dauvissat often prioritizes phenolic ripeness, so I could see how the acid in this at it’s young stage might not be for every Dauvissat fan. I did not come away with any regrets opening this, and thought it showed great. I sometimes get a hint of petrol on Dauvissat, so I can see the Riesling reference, but for me this was archetypal Chablis, and one of the better La Forests I’ve ever had.

Dauvissat 2013s have been drinking really well for a while; I’ve found 2014s to be fairly tight, which isn’t surprising given the vintage. Mine are sleeping in storage, and hopefully won’t come out as apple juice. A 2017 Forest last night was excellent as well, and the 2011 is also in a good spot (and not green like some Chablis).
