TN: 2014 The Walls Vineyards Syrah Gaspard

  • 2014 The Walls Vineyards Syrah Gaspard - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain (7/27/2017)
The Walls was a clear highlight of a recent trip to WW, and really pleased this showed as well as I remember it from the tasting room. Decanted 4 hrs, shows some real serious Cote Rotie like bacon notes, as well white flowers and a touch of ash. I loved the fruit profile here, pure blackberry but restrained and almost delicate - an inky quality too. I’d guess the oak was 20 to 30% tops. If its higher, damn, well done. Should be a beautiful canvas for further development. I though well priced too for what’s in the bottle $45. Class in a glass no question. (92 pts.)

Dale–I’ll be there next week, and I’ll try to track down Ali, or at least the wines. they are certainly one of the most interesting new places.

John, knowing your palate from various posts on WB, I can say with confidence this is well worth your time. Besides the quality of the wine, I found the low key tasting room very refreshing compared to the normal wine bar set up / they have a couple of nice couches or a table to sit down to, with a pretty detailed explanation with each pour. I would welcome your thoughts on the wines. I thought they were all very good (except Tempranillo wine I think was a little too acidic) with the cabernet blend as a highlight that was tasted from barrel. Dale

I did make it to The Walls this weekend–always a good visit. Unfortunately Ali and Jake were bottling and we didn’t get much of a chance to chat. Of the wines that they haven’t sold out of, I agree the Gaspard was the winner. I also liked the Stanley Groovy, probably in part because it’s 80% Touriga national, and we just got back from Portugal and the Duoro river, and sampled a number of nice dry Touriga’s while there. The stanley groovy is a bit soft on the palate, but has a great spiciness to it that brought back memories of Portugal. (They also make some pretty nice Chardonays, but I really don’t need tobe buying domestic Chard, other than John Abbot’s at Devona, which we sampled this weekend as well).

We opened a bottle last night for a nightcap after a bottle of cool Bojo with dinner, hit us like a ton of bricks!
