TN: 2014 School House Mescolanza Syrah Blend

  • 2014 School House Mescolanza Syrah Blend - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (9/10/2022)
Like a broken record, I again refer to how much I love mountain fruit - the brightness and ‘pop’ of red and blue mountain fruit is always a great start for me, and this wine has it in spades. While this is a GSM blend, the Syrah is definitely dominant in the nose and color - both have a meaty, dark character. The palate shows more of the Grenache and Mourvèdre, although still Syrah-focused - you get some ripe red strawberry from the Grenache, still a rich blend overall, finishing with smoked meats, dry leaves and dark cherry. In a great space now, enjoy.

Thank you for the review!! One of my favorite northern cal wineries for Pinot and Chard. Real old word style wine! I had the 2011 bottle of same wine last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Was a perfectly aged wine in its sweet spot. Visited the winery a month ago and takes you back to the beginning of napa. Some may not like the outdoor picnic table and very casual quad ride through the vineyard but what a great ending to our day.

Almost forgot, 2018 was first all Syrah bottling and real enjoyable. Honestly by the time this came around I had major tasting fatigue so looking forward to re-trying this bottle in near future.

I haven’t looked at the blend but this particularly one must be very heavy Syrah - as you said, plenty of old school Syrah character, likely because it’s mountain fruit!
