TN: 2014 Schäfer-Fröhlich „Schiefergestein“ - we drink Ortsweine too early

2014 Schäfer-Fröhlich „Schiefergestein“

Here we have a „Selection Tino Seiwert“. Tino Seiwert, former co-owner of Pinard de Picard, is now in heaven and drinks Coche-Dury, Keller, Burlotto etc. with god. Pinard de Picard is for me the best wine merchant in Germany. Tino selected a barrel „Fuder“ in the cellar of Tim Fröhlich and this barrel was bottled exclusively for customers of Pinard de Picard.

This 2014er was served yesterday to me by a very good friend in Potsdam. And it confirmed what I always suspected, we all drink the „Ortsweine“ too early. AND also demonstrates the great agebility of Riesling. A British friend told me last week that a well-known american wine-journalist wrote that GGs should be best drink within 5 years. bullshit.

No classic S-F stinky notes anymore, no brutal minerality and no highlighted acidity. Instead everything is well-rounded and found its place (yin yang). Of course the slate minerality is still dominant, but much more nuanced. Lovely flavor of Amalfi lemon too. Mmmmmh…….

BTW, Tim did a fantastic job in 2014, as the „Felseneck“ GG is mind-blowing. At the end of 2019 I drank two bottles in a restaurant at the island of Sylt. But this Ortswein based on younger vines of Felseneck is very good too.

Even the Gutsweine are been drunk too early! Take a Dönnhoff trocken, wait for it 10 years and see

Thanks Martin.

In a similar vein, I had a bottle of the ‘13 Vulkangestein a couple years back and it was lively beautiful wine. I think you are right on. Thanks for sharing!
