TN: 2014 Juan Gil - Monastrell "Honoro Vera" Organic (Spain, Murcia, Jumilla)

2014 Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell Jumilla Honoro Vera Organic - Spain, Murcia, Jumilla (10/4/2016)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 2 hours –

NOSE: purple-fruited; smells like this is going to be a wine with ripe fruit and good acidity; no mineral tones; no funk; pleasant savory green olive note; simple.

BODY: dark violet color of great depth; medium to medium-full bodied.

TASTE: soft, drying tannins; fruit is ripe, but not gloppy; slightly pruney flavor, and muddled, too; medium acidity; somewhat anonymous; light oak; 14% alc. not really noticeable; quite nice for less than $7, and I may even buy again despite its lack of engaging character. A Drink Now wine.

50, 5, 11, 15, 6 = (87 pts.)

That’s about right. Somewhat higher than I would have scored it but it’s a good value. They’re trying to upgrade the image of the region and of Monastrell and I admire them for that although I’m not a huge fan of their lower end wines.

Still, it’s less than ten bucks and it’s a valid wine. Wish there were more of that nature. It’s what CA needs to do more of. Good to have around the house.

Agreed - I wish CA was more adept at creating its own version of this.

I actually bought a bottle of this but then took it to a dinner with (non-wino) friends and ended up not getting to taste it. Sounds like it could be worth picking up for low-key evenings where a budget bottle will do the trick. Thanks for the note [cheers.gif]

A ripe, soft (light tannins), solar wine. Monastrell is not easy to guess and one might think of a “lesser” shiraz.

Sounds ok for an aged $8 bottle.

It was quite serviceable as a young $8 bottle; have no idea how it’s doing these days.

Is this the same as the silver label? I had a very pleasant experience with that one, think it was one of the first wines I drank with the intent to make tasting notes.

Nope, not the silver label. This one is even cheaper.
