2014 Altovinum Evodia- Spain, Aragón, Calatayud (10/10/2016)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 2 days; TN from Day 2 –
NOSE: ripe purple fruits; medium-strong savory stems note; grapefruit zest; no funk or mineral tones; dark cherry fruit leather; medium+ expressiveness; much better on Day 2 than Day 1 — it seemed more savory and complex on Day 2.
BODY: dark violet color of great depth; medium bodied.
TASTE: ripe blueberry and purple fruits; low or medium-low acidity; hint of ballpoint pen ink; medium-light stems note; 14.5% alc. well-hidden; simple, but good; great QPR.
I’ve had very good vintages of these wines and some very bad. I used to love this wine, poured it BTG at a few restaurants and even had it at our wedding. That being said the 2011 - 2012 vintages of this wine were really out of whack, hot, sweet, and one dimensional. Even in the good years this wine never had tons of depth, but was a good fruit forward clean wine for a great price. I haven’t had it since, but will defiantly give it another try.
