I have yet to met a '14 white Burg I’ve not liked.
2014 A. et P. de Villaine Rully Les Saints-Jacques- France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully (4/14/2018)
Pale golden color; quiet nose of flowers and white fruit. Fresh and crisp palate, that fills out and sweetens with time. Clean, ripe-ish fruit balanced with hints of salinity, and lower acidity than I’d ideally like. It’s not especially long or complex, just well made French Chardonnay drinking nicely now.
I see what you did there. Not a producer I buy, but I might start. I’m exploring and enjoying white Burgs from lesser heralded appellations like Rully, Bouzderon, and Monthelie. New mission. Cheers.
Honestly I don’t buy them either, except the occasional bottle. There are just too many things to buy. Every bottle I’ve had has been excellent, though. I particularly like the Bouzeron Aligoté.
I’m not a regular consumer of Burgundy but have been enjoying a 2014 Jadot [Rully] the last few nights, well chilled, with a spatch cocked chicken (with a harrissa and preserved lemon paste/rub), couscous, and a salad with a tahini dressing. It’s bright, zippy, and light. The wine goes well with the food actually – the spiciness of the food dancing with the juicy acid in the wine. There is some interest and depth to this, without any heaviness. I guess it gets some oak, but I can’t taste any, assuming vanilla is the cue. Just a real pleasant crisp 2014 white from France. I should have bought more, it’s a fair value.
Thanks, Arv. That sounds great. Very much like the 14s have been showing to me, across various levels. Real value in Rully and other lesser appellations. Can drink them young and just enjoy. Cheers.
I’ve been buying the Mercurey Les Mottos sine the 2002 vintage with irregularity. Every time I open a bottle with 5-8 years it I keep kicking myself for not buying more.
