TN: 2013 Tulocay Napa PN

I first met Bill Cadman in 1997 when we met one on one at his house/winery in Coombsville, CA. He was very gracious and opened bottles on his picnic table. His PN from Haynes Vineyard was a standout.

This is also from Haynes but I believe from younger vines and made by his daughter. Haynes is in a cooler part of Coombsville and I believe the vineyard was recently sold.

This is a truly unique expression of Napa PN. The nose has maturing scents of perfectly ripened red fruits, roses and incense. The texture is outstanding, mouth coating with excellent acidity and a long finish. Then there is that earthiness. Truly unique and one of the most terroir based California PN in my experience. Excellent on all accounts and every sip is a treat.

+1.

I was lucky enough to grab some of these last year, and I agree completely (though I’m trying to be patient with my remaining bottles). I latch on to any Tulocay that comes my way, but this happens all too infrequently here on the East Coast.

Mark, this wine is drinking so well now, if you have more than a couple certainly open one and enjoy it.

Remember my local wine shop (in Santa Fe) in the late '90’s being big on these. I haven’t heard or thought about them for a long time. Nice to know they’re still at it!

Thanks for the thoughtful tasting notes! '13 was a great vintage.

If FedEx will deliver, we will send [cheers.gif]

Welcome, Brie! I miss tasting with you!

I was wondering what happened to Tulocay. So good to hear they are going strong. I was Bill’s wholesaler in Minnesota back in the mid 1990s - and always loved his wines. Was always partial to his Cabernets, but the Pinots were lovely as well (with time). Will have to seek some out -

Didn’t Bill work as a guide at Robert Mondavi winery? If so, I met him circa 1994. Nice man.

Hi Merrill! Miss tasting with you too, let me know next time you’re coming to the winery and I’ll stop by!

Yes, my dad was a tour guide for over 20 years at Mondavi. That’s where he perfected his stand-up routine.

I visited your Dad sometime around 1980. He & your Mom had just divorced and the house was pretty barren. I always remember that very steep driveway there on CoombsvilleRd. We sat outside and chatted for several hrs & tasted wine. I really liked your Dad a lot, though he wouldn’t remember me. Loved his Chards and PinotBlancs. Have you ever had the LH Amador Zin he made about '76 or '77??
Where is Barbara these days??
Assume your Dad is doing OK? I should visit him again when I’m out there.
Tom

Brie,

Are you saying that when Bill told the tourists that flies were buzzing around his head because of the shit sandwich he had for lunch…that he was joking??

Yup, Mel… that story is a legend!!

What is the pricing on this wine?

And how do you pronounce Tulocay?

Thanks!

Their website shows the 2014 PN for $40

The 14 is not this bottling, it is the top tier wine.

So the wine you started this thread about is not the Hayne Vineyard, it’s the appellation Napa Valley?

Have you ever had the Hayne Vineyard, and if so, how is it different?

This note is on the “Napa” bottle. It is from Haynes. I have not tasted the Haynes designated wine in too long to recall the difference.

Perhaps Brie can comment.

It is this label
