2013 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Chase Creek - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District (12/16/2020)
Wanted to have something heavy tonight, and I kinda got what I asked for. Decanted for 3 hours, now swirling away in a Cab Sauv glass well after dinner. Dark as night garnet and violet. Legs slow to drop swirling around. The nose is lighter than I expected expressing black fruits, bell pepper, mint, cocoa powder, and there is a sweet air to it if you really pause and take it in slow. Palate is blackberry, plums. gripping tannins up-front, pepper and some green herb spices… The middle has bright acidity against a silky backdrop, oak integrating. The finish is anchored by plums and chocolate. A few more hours in, smokey characteristics permeate throughout. It has great balance of a lot of components that threaten to overtake each other, then don’t. They play nice together. It has weight however comes across more elegant and lighter than you’d think; drinking well and enjoyable.
