2013 Sandler Wine Company Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (6/3/2016)
Ed’s wines seem to fall into a few categories: One that is playful and just fun, a second that is super contemplative and somewhat complicated and a newly discoveres third which is dead-smack in the middle. This is such a wine.
Nose of macerated bing cherries and CHowards candy, this is super intense and refined. Color is equally deep and dark, almost mysteriously so for a Sandler or even August West at that. Palate has black and red currants with some red fruits popping out at the very almost imperceptible edges. If you don’t air this one correctly you get a dustiness on the tannins with a slight edge, but give this an hour to shine and shine it will, it becomes perfectly balanced and textured to a near plushness. Now soft and playful, you can take it like Play-Doh and do what you will with it; food or as a plain old aperitif, sans anything but a book & chair; either way, you will not be disappointed. Deep and pure and long and precise and while it might not be your father’s Pinot Noir it just might be your mother’s. It’s a real sleeper for me and one I might want to contemplate my own play-fullness for just a bit more when the mood arises. (91 pts.)
