TN: 2013 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard

  • 2013 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County (2/18/2018)
Purchased at Foodland at Mauna Lani resort of all places. Popped and poured then aerated in the glass for 45 minutes. Darker ruby color. Nose of lavender, dark plum blossom, brambles, faint iron particles, red berry. Dark ripe berry and plum flavors on the palate with pleasing complexity and depth despite its young age. Dusty but fine tannin counteracting freshening acidity. Long finish of mulberry, gooseberry, brier, red soil, and stone. Delicious and very well made. (92 pts.)

2013 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County (9/22/2020)
– cork pulled approx. 20 min . before initial taste –
– tasted non-blind over 2 hours –
– from 375mL –

NOSE: light; red-fruited; high-toned citrus; a touch leafy/woody; some light oak notes.

BODY: medium-light bodied.

TASTE: light, slightly tart red fruits; hint of funk (brett?); 13.1% alc. not noticeable; opened up after approx. 90 min; paired well with pork tenderloin and wild rice. Gut: 89 - 91

Opened for 30 min, drank over 2 hours.

First impressions, CA Pinot. Nothing really intellectual here but it was hitting all the points of CA pinot fruit. It is a good bottle of wine but just seems like it’s laking a point of view. First smell I thought CA pinot and could have moved on, didn’t really change over dinner. Glad to drink it but don’t think I’ll be trying to source any.

Popped and poured at cellar temp, cork fully saturated and a bit crumbly, but wine seems sound. Translucent rusty red. Cola, sandalwood and white pepper on a somewhat restrained nose. Nice sweet red fruit on the attack with good texture, just lacking a bit in acidity and oomph compared to some of the other vineyards. In a good place, not likely to fall off a cliff, but not sure much improvement with more age.
