TN: 2013 Marcarini Barolo Brunate (Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo)

  • 2013 Marcarini Barolo Brunate - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (2/25/2018)
Decanted 4 hrs give or take. I opened this more out of a need to clear some cellar space and I hadn’t had a Marcarini Brunate before. While expecting an exercise in self masochism, I was very pleasantly surprised at what this bottle gave up last night. Very simple strawberry nose initially, but after about three 3 hr mark, things got a lot more serious, as some mentholated themes kicked in along with the fruit morphing into darker tones such as black cherry / plums and the like. While there was plenty of acidity and tannin, I didn’t find it overbearing at all, in fact, this was rather easy to drink. Good grip throughout and while this may never be a elite Barolo, I think anyone owning this will be happy to have it in the cellar for the next decade or two, well priced at $50. (92 pts.)

Hi Dale
Even with trad wines, there is usually that window of drinkability on release, before the portcullis of tannins slams down on the rest of the wine. Not the best age to drink them, but not the worst either. I rather like Marcarini and how they stick to what they do for a fair price.

Ian

The Marcarini wines often show as very lightweight when they’re young. But the Brunate can really flesh out with age. In general, it’s a very elegant wine, but it’s no weakling.

Useful note thanks. Just received a 6 pack, but have not been game to crack any 13s yet. Buy this wine most vintages as I like its laid back style.
