TN: 2013 Leitz Dragonstone

Sampled last night, this was the most appealing vintage of the wine in years to my palate. It’s notably drier than many prior versions. In fact Johannes Leitz has confirmed that it has “only” 38 g/l of RS, while prior vintages had much more (2006 was highest at 70 g/l). The lower sugar level has enabled the wine to show much more minerality, and be more vibrant in its overall feel, instead of rich and sweet. To my taste this is the best Dragonstone since the 2001 Drachenstein Riesling QbA (predates the fancy name).

Great! I liked the 2012 very well, which I didn’t think was all that sweet. This is even drier?

That says it all. For me, was the super QPR deal of my life. What was it, $9 or so?

Used to be. A little more now but still a buy.

Yes. The 2001 was $9. Still have some in the cellar.
And yes, Johannes confirmed this is the driest Dragonstone.

Is the low rs indicative for the vintage, in general?

Too soon to know Ian.

Since we are on the topic of Leitz. Anyone know why there is no Terry Theise coverage on Leitz from his latest catalogue?

Johannes Leitz has opted to move on from Theise/Skurnik, to join his close friend Kevin Pike’s new venture.

Thanks for the note. I have notice any 2013s on the shelves.

J

I just noticed Leitz has done an interview with Levi, will have to check it out.

Yes, it is worth a listen. He explains why he left Theise to work with Kevin Pike near the end of the interview.
