2013 Domaine la Soumade Rasteau Cuvée Prestige - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Rasteau (12/4/2020)
Good Value. Given a short decant, 45 or so. deep crimson/ruby, opaque and bright at the edge. Medium bodied, I get bright black and red fruits on the nose with pleasant garrigue qualities, some menthol, and some root beer. Front is blackberry with some black cherry notes, earthiness and cough drop towards the middle. Medium(-) acidity, firm smokey tannins towards the finish integrated with dark red berry. Feels a little sharp on the finish, not so much heat, just texture and taste. Nice glass, went well with meatballs, rigatoni, and peppers. Its good QPR, pleasant on its own or with food; and sang more on the last glass than the first. I’d enjoy its vibrancy sooner than later despite it having some room to run.

This was all the rage in the early ‘00’s, Parker had given them huge scores and they were $15-$25 per bottle depending on the Cuvée, I drank many, they were delicious with a touch of rusticity…

Thanks for the tasting note!!
Back in my retail days ('97-'07) the Rasteau wines of the Rhône Valley were some of my favorites. Once in a blue moon, the sales rep for a New Orleans-based distributor would offer me a handful of bottles of Domaine le Soumade “Fleur de Confiance” to sell at the shop where I worked.
Though more expensive than the mass-produced CdR’s and CdP’s, the Soumade reds would sell out like a flash!
Only after I left the wine shop and began teaching middle school did other bottlings from Domaine le Soumade become available in my area. The “Cuvée Confiance”, “Les Violettes”, and “Cuvée Prestige” were all delicious (probably ~2005 vintage?). IIRC they were more affordable, too!
