- 2013 Arnot-Roberts Pinot Noir Trout Gulch Vineyard - USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains (6/23/2026)
Only six years since my prior bottle (that I did not care for), so basically a new experience, and wow. I guess it needed some cellar time. Thanks dad for putting some away and never drinking it (a common problem for dad). Still plenty of bright red fruit, a little bit of tannin, but most of the structure here is acidity. Stony, almost salty base, and then various complexifying elements come in at various times: green tobacco, moist earth, cinnamon stick, etc.). The fruit is persistent and remains fresh even after more than 24 hours open, so probably lots of time to go here.
Thanks for that! Trout Gulch is a special spot. The wines are edgy and bright. I love the A-R Chardonnay from there. Actually just picked up a 3-pack of the ‘18 Trout Gulch Chard from K&L.
I believe at one point (forgive me if I’m misremembering) a long time back you had noted on a post about Arnot Roberts that you don’t buy as much or ever because they never seem to come around. If I am remembering that correctly, does a bottle like this make you think twice or do you still generally have the same feeling?
Apologies if I’m wrong, this would have been 2, 3 years ago?
It certainly surprised me. That said, perhaps the wine changed and I changed.
I still have a lot, and even bought a little recently (Trousseau). We’ll see what happens when I grab a Syrah or a Cabernet.
I popped a A-R 2010 North Coast Syrah last year that was hard as nails still. So…
