Yesterday I did something I rarely do, I took a recommendation from the Sommelier on the Anthem of the Sea cruise ship and glad I did. Last night aboard and a discount of 30% because of it. Sure, lets rock it.
Beautiful medium light color. Pretty nose of spring flowers, strawberries and soft sassafras. Quite beautiful actually. Once on the palate I detect just the faintest amount of toasted oak but that dissipated within minutes and this sung for the next hour. Elegance and poise with pretty light strawberries and pale cranberries that just seemed to be layered into it. Speaking of layers, this had many. Very Burgundian in its approach, this was just deftly balanced with a beautiful lithe mouth-feel that grabbed your attention and never let go. Softly powerful and just elegant and refined a perfect example of exactly what we were seeking out when we too our seats in Vintages; kudos to that fine man for the recommendation. Wine like this truly remind me of how little I know of wines and I have some learning to still do in my 35th year of drinking it. One to seek out. (94 pts.)

Boy I am really surprised by your notes. I pulled my notes up from 6 months ago and the first word on my notes for nose and palate was OAK.

There was SO MUCH oak on this wine, I couldn’t get past it and it ruined it for me. I wasn’t able to detect much of anything else other than the oak.

I think I have one bottle left and I had wrote it off but maybe some oak has blown off?

Glad to see your notes though.

Brandon, interestingly enough when it was opened and I got a tiny taste I detected something amiss. I asked the Somm to give it a taste thinking it flawed. He did and said no, it just needs some air. I have not been wrong about telling a Somm that a wine may be flawed since about the mid 80s, so that streak was broken. He pours and we let sit a few minutes and it was amazing. All clear. He also asked if he should decant and I said no. Glad I did not decant.

Another theory is maybe after drinking all the big cabs in my life I am a bit immune to oak? At least more than others.

Cheerios!
