I came on this at Rochambeau in Dobbs Ferry, north of NYC, last month. I was always a fan of Navarro’s wines and you rarely see them at retail in this area, so I grabbed it. (The last Navarro I had was a 2004 Late Harvest Riesling ‘Cluster Select’ a year or two ago that was off-the-charts good.)
A nice medium golden hue. Faint caramel scents on the nose. In the mouth, there’s caramel sweetness that I normally associate with oaked chardonnay. However, this is their unoaked wine, I believe, so I guess this is just some other tertiary element. Depending on your preferences, this has developed some nice complexity or is teetering on the edge of the cliff. Last night I felt that latter; retasting tonight I think it’s still a few yards from the cliff but I’d have preferred it younger. And it shows more acidity tonight; last night it seemed a bit blousy, to use a British term. 13.8%.
Not bad for a wine that probably wasn’t meant to be held this long, and may not have had perfect storage since release. Rochambeau still have some for $25 on their website.
