TN: 2012 Keller „Niersteiner Pettenthal“ Riesling Kabinett -Auction-

2012 Keller „Niersteiner Pettenthal“ Riesling Kabinett -Auction-

Here we have the first Pettenthal Kabinett vintage by Keller after Julia&KP took over the vineyard from the estate F.K. Schmitt. In addition it´s an auction wine.

Such a beautiful and sophisticated Kabi. Full of finesse „Feinheit “, elegance, lightness „Leichtigkeit “ and a looooong finish. This Kabi makes you happy and you will smile all over your face, promised. Quite a lemon colour, so good years ahead, but it is definitely no mistake to open a bottle now.

Anyway, a textbook Kabinett.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

Roter Hang

German expression for “red slope”. Steep slopes in Nierstein and Nackenheim, directly by the Rhine, named after the type of soil that already shimmers red from afar. The soil, which is called “Rotliegendes” in Rheinhessen, is a red slate that was created 250 million years ago, and offers perfect conditions for wine growing. The wines from this type of soil have a strong mineral character. Every year the winemakers organize a wine tasting on Roter H
ang, where all the wines grown in that vineyard can be tasted right where they are from.

And to highlight the standing/reputation of FK Schmitt Riesling, a 1952 FK Schmitt „Nierstein Hipping“ Auslese from Roter Hang was poured at Her Majesty’s coronation in 1953.

YES they do.

As you know we drank back to 1895 from F.K. Schmitt and a 1921TbA was one of the best wines I have ever drunken. Divine

oldest I have had was 45 and it was great. Many, many bottles from the 60 and 70s still showing young.

The 1971s were terrific too, no wonder.

In the book Mosel Wine, the following footnote includes a few details about the Roter Hang, which I discovered during my research and tried to keep it concise. Keller holds a plot from Schmitt in Flächenhahl in today’s Hipping. In the late 19th century, the leading estate in Nierstein was Heinrich Schlamp jr.

The other places best known for Riesling at the time were the Pfalz’s Mittelhaardt, especially the top sites in Forst (Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten, Ungeheuer), and the Rheinhessen’s Rheinfront—in particular, the Roter Hang at Nierstein and Nackenheim. The prominent Heinr. Schlamp jr. estate (today’s Schätzel) annually auctioned in Mainz his Rieslings, including Spätlesen and Auslesen. Each Stück or Halbstück held wine from a specific site in Nierstein, such as Pettenthal, Hipping, Fuchsloch (now a part of the enlarged Einzellage Niersteiner Hipping, along with other former sites, such as Flächenhahl), or Rehbach (a large part of the post-1971 Einzellage Niersteiner Pettenthal). Announcements from Schlamp included detailed, site-specific descriptions of each offering. In 1890, Carl Gunderloch, a banker in Mainz, acquired the former Simmler’sches Gut in Nackenheim, and auctioned his Nackenheimer wines, also Auslesen, by the Stück and Halbstück.

DANKE Lars.

Yes, FLÄSCHENHAHL.

Here my short notes from the legendary tasting:

Mind-blowing was a 1921 Nierstein KEHR & FLÄSCHENHAHL Trockenbeerenauslese which was one of the best Rieslings I’ve ever drunken. Pure magic with unbelievable harmony and never-ending length. nectar of the gods 100/100

A 1971 Nierstein REHBACH Auslese was fantastic too with a lot of Mokka flavors and such seductive.

I was also stunned about the freshness&finesse of 1934 Nierstein REHBACH Auslese

Also great a 1953 Nierstein REHBACH Beerenauslese with good length.

And a very nice 1934 Nierstein PETTENTHAL & AUFLANGEN Trockenbeerenauslese

1895 Nierstein FLÄSCHENHAHL Auslese was surprisingly quite fresh on the palate.

Lucky you! Do you have a photo of the 1895 vintage?

I have to look, I think I have.

If you have it, that would be great. I just want to see what’s on the label. In wine journals from the 1890s, I have come across a “Georg Schmitt.”

I have found the labels. One re-labeled from 1895 and one from 1898

Thanks for digging up the photos of Hermannshof. As you mentioned, neither label is an original from the 1890s.

Fläschenhahl is an old site name within the expanded Hipping. The original Hipping (Gewann Hipping) is just south of Fläschenhahl towards Nierstein.

I just found more old photos………
