TN: 2012 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon Indian Wells

  • 2012 Chateau Ste. Michelle Cabernet Sauvignon Indian Wells - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (10/3/2014)
Out of a Riedel Somm. Very nice with berries, smoke, cassis and oak. Medium plus finish and flavorful. Lots of spices. Excellent value and far out performs Napa at this price point. (90 pts.)

Well, is there a napa cab at $12.99 that is fit for human consumption? Serious question.

No but the Louis Martini from Sonoma is pretty good for the price point of $6.99 with mail in rebates.

The stars will have to align at the $13-15 price point, but cameron hughes surprises to the upside.

Which Cameron Hughes?

Yes which Cameron Hughes. All the ones I have tasted have been oaked to death.

I agree, and their customers seem to like it that way!

John, thx for the note. Sounds like Chateau Ste. Michelle hasn’t turned to spoof with their less-expensive wines like Columbia Crest did a while back.

Alex I all but have given up with Columbia Crest’s Grand Estates line. The H3 line is drinkable but Grand Estates was one I recommended at the cheap price point but not anymore.

Even on day 2 Indian Wells Cab is solid. This will be a rare case purchase. A local shop has this for $10.99 which is the best deal on it I have seen in a long time.

So CH wines are just oak bombs?

The 2012 IW is not. Yes as stated earlier CC wines have gone that route. Note the vintage 2012.

It’s funny…that wine is $19.99 in Maine. It’s amazing the impact shipping wines across the country & the three tier system has on the cost.

It’can be had for about $16 in NY/NJ.

There is a whole in the wall shop in St. Paul called Morelli’s which must be fine with making a profit of less than 50 cents a bottle. The volume they do is off the charts and has a huge following. They sell a lot of beer, spirits and wines under $20.

I hate going over there but Haskell’s matches their adds so I drive 2 blocks and avoid all the lines. They only take cash or check which helps on their pricing model.

Avalon Napa?

I agree Kris. Avalon Napa has been good. The other that isn’t too much more is Buehler.
