2012 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Blanc Château de Fonsalette Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône (9/27/2024)
There's some volatility and nutty and cheesiness to the nose. The palate is where it all happens for this wine. Great texture, kinda waxy and quite unctuous. There are custard apple and orchard fruit notes and a gentle honeyed sweetness. It is rich, deep and powerful and very long.
Fonsalette will last for decades in good vintages. But it will be a different wine.
Since you’ve got 2 bottles I’d open one to see where it’s at, depending on your own preference for young or aged wines.
But don’t worry about it going down hill, they don’t age very quick in my experience.
I just had a ‘93 last night! I would echo the waxy texture and power. The alcohol definitely came through upon opening but mellowed out, though still a big wine. Was surprised with how fresh and youthful the wine felt - acidity still there and a mix of orchard fruit, sage, and a slight caramelized presence. Was debating when to open and I’m glad finally went for it
