2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary- USA, California, Napa Valley (6/18/2014)
This wine was dark and inviting. I have had several caymus wines before that were off putting of raisin and prune. This one did not show those characteristics but was very ripe. There was vanilla, cocoa powder, espresso, and dark berry. This borders on over the top ripeness and will surely turn off some as too close to a port profile, but with time and/or the right food this is a nice wine. I can’t see myself drinking more than two glasses due to seeming a bit rich. (89 pts.)
Yeah I noticed that. Their 2009-2010 too me was waaayyyy over the top over ripe. Tasted like a port wine for sure. I do like ripe wines sometimes but those were overdone for sure. But somehow the 2012 has some decent character to it. I wonder if you give this time if it will help even out a bit?? I dunno I try to give wines a fair shake no matter the label. I usually make fun of Caymus’ style but their 2012 is a better effort than their recent wines so I was surprised in a good way
What? Gallo is a $3 billion in sales company with 5,000 employees.
I would be surprised if the entire Wagner Family operation is a $250 million company.
Do you see any past vintages on winebid for $35? That should answer your question.
Every single year they release their new vintage and the peanut gallery comes out with - “It’s too ripe”, “It’s over oaked”, “It’s like candy”, “It’s like Syrup” etc.
Somehow they still manage to sell through every single year. Year in and year out.
I can also assure you that 2014 will be a record for the company in sales - the wine is moving like hotcakes.
Whether or not people on this board or CT think the wine is awesome is completely irrelevant. Joe Public loves it…and Caymus knows it.
Caymus def. went the way of spiked Dr. Pepper…there was a time I liked that over the top action but now it offends me…too many have gotten in this bed…In fact I am still stunned from years past tasting of '07 Vineyard 29…that glass of milk shake was dumped immediately
I don’t begrudge the Wagner clan their financial success. I resent that they’ve trashed Charlie Wagner’s legacy with the winemaking decisions they’ve made. Building the business and making great wine are not mutually exclusive endeavors.
Wine should be good when it is available for the public to purchase. It may not be at it’s peak per se but it should still have an enjoyment factor. If it not close to ready to be consumed than the winery in my opinion has made a very big mistake. There is nothing wrong with drinking a wine early or after it’s best years have passed. Whatever floats your boat I guess. I knew the wine was young but wanted to give a whirl since I could get it by the glass. Would I open a 2011 Petrus right now? Probably not, but if someone did the wine better be good still. Not undrinkable because it is a young wine.
I just got an e-mail from Royal Wine Merchants offering the wine in 1 liter bottles. It says $648 for a case of 9 1-liters. That seems too low, no – equivalent to about $55 per 750ml?
