At first this is all about bright, pure fruit and a stony/saline mineral undercurrent beneath, with sweet, flowery aromatics and bright acids keeping it very nicely balanced. With some air (this was double-decanted right before being poured with dinner) this really transforms though, as the ripe fruit takes a step back, and layers of more savoury herbal, leafy and dusty mineral notes emerge around it. There’s that typical Alzinger lightness of touch on the palate and impeccable balance with bright acids keeping it very precise and vibrant, and this is a really stunning wine. Pretty much what I’ve come to expect each year from Alzinger’s Steinertal.
sounds great! Love those Austrian Rieslings.
Nice note! This and the Hohereck will surely find a home in my cellar.
Alzinger killed it in '12. The Hohereck’s also stunning, and I’m glad I bought a bunch of those two, plus the Hollerin (also great!) and Loibenberg, which I plan to check into soon.
