2011 Clos Saron Pinot Noir Home Vineyard - USA, California, Sierra Foothills (11/1/2014)
This might be the poster kid for the French term, “terroir” and definitely taste like it comes from a specific piece of geography. It’s a little foursquare at times and seems like what you might expect from an old school Pommard but, it certainly has its charm and intrigue. If it’s missing anything, for me, it may be finesse and refinement. This is more in your face than I might completely prefer. But, it has depth in spades. I made the mistake of not letting this sit up at an angle for a day so the wine was a bit cloudy. I notice it had a bit of spritz on my first pour and was completely closed on the nose so I decanted which was really worth doing even though I rarely ever decant a PN. Once decanted this wine showed a big earthy, almost forest floor nose with some funk. The earthiness carriers over to the palate which is spicy, stony and relatively smooth and long. Not sure I want a cellar full of these but I will try to check in on this producer from time to time. I’d guess Kermit Lynch would love this wine and the producer’s no hold’s barred, spirit. I definitely would like to try one where the sediment had been properly handled next time. This has a kinship with the wines of Occhipinti from Sicily. ALC 13.3% from a NE facing vineyard at 1600ft in the Sierra foothills. Fascinating stuff! Paid $50 and worth it. (92 pts.)
