TN: 2011 Carlisle Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard

  • 2011 Carlisle Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain (7/18/2013)
This was a nice surprise, as I had little in the way of expectations from a Cali Grüner from a mostly-red producer. Opens with green apple, quince, and vague floral notes which evolve into an intriguing herbal/minty background note. Bracing, but not steely, acidity. A bit of weight to the mouthfeel. Apple, citrus, underripe pear, touch of lanolin, mangosteen. Overall impression was very positive, and I’m hopeful that we will see more such domestic examples of this grape.

Nice notes. I was also pleasantly surprised at the Gruner - I had never had one before and did not know what to expect. It seemed like a very precisely made wine - very clean and very tasty. Hope to latch onto a few of the 2012’s next time around.

Yup, Nate…pretty much as I would describe the wine. It’s easily the best Calif Gruner I’ve tried (only the Chien from SantaBarbara comes close) and can
go toe-to-toe w/ most Austrian versions I think.
Though Mike is known for his red wines, his whites are every bit as good as it reds. The guy appears to know a thing or two about winemaking.

Nate, Nice note. I love GVs and Mike’s version is every bit as good as the better Austrian versions. I’ll definitely be a buyer in future years.
