TN: 2010 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT (Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT)

2010 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (11/29/2014)
Well this was a bit of overkill for pizza! I wanted to test out a bottle, and figured what the heck. The 2010 Cepparello is very suave and polished for a young Sangiovese. It’s full of red fruit and a subtle spice. There’s a warm herb element on the finish that keeps the wine balanced and fresh. I really like this, and may plow through a whole lot of bottles very quickly.

Yes. Yes, it was. But why not? I like this wine a lot, too. The late-90s versions were my introduction to good Sangiovese, and despite the polish you mention, Cepparello always speaks of the good side of the grape for me. The 10 is definitely delicious young.

I am not afraid of young wines, but this might be a little too much. The 2004 and the 2007 are just starting to drink really well. And they are much more friendly vintages.

Well that would be really helpful if I had any of those other vintages.

I love these wines, but often fear of drinking them too young. They are also a really good values when you think of Brunello price inflation. This is the kind of stuff I’m buying in place of Brunello these days. I’m also a fan of the polish they have–not modern per se, just refined.

A reminder to me that I must hunt out one of my two bottles of the '01 which should be drinking rather well now. My first bottle (opened with a tasting group) was corked so it would be nice to see a shining example.

I did have the feeling that the 2010 Isole e Olena Chianti Classico was starting to shut down maybe–earlier, it was drinking pretty well compared to some of the much more backward Chianti (e.g., 2010 Felsina Chianti Classico), but that may no longer be true.

Most open of the Chiantis I have tried is the 2010 Felsina Rancia, which is surprisingly accessible…

This bottle was not shut down at all.
