2010 David Girard Grenache Eldorado Estate Vineyard - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado County (3/3/2014)
Under screwcap, twist-and-pour off the list at Taste in Plymouth, CA. The color is a wow from the start, intense bright crystal clear ruby looks like gemstones in the glass. Nose is intensely floral with white pepper and strawberry in the background. Palate has crunchy strawberry, but it’s subdued with a framing of garrique and pepper becoming more prominent with air. Finish has a nice cut with unobtrustive tannin and a rocky minerality which gives the impression of granite. Over lunch with a friend who knows a thing or two about foothills wine, he said it’s the best Grenache he’s tasted from the area. I’ve had Girard on my list to visit for a few years, but haven’t made it up there, now I’m resolved to pay them a visit next time I’m up.
