2009 Navarro Vineyards Zinfandel - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (12/5/2011)
Dark garnet red, clear complexion
Intense aromas of blackberries and tahitian vanilla bean. Accented by pie dough and a light dusting of brown spice. Medium bodied, mid level acidity, moderate tannins. Juicy and bright with clear fruit character layered with french oak. Moderate blackberry and ethanol finish. Overall, a very solid Zinfandel that has the richness and depth that leads me to believe there’s a small percentage of Petite Sirah. -
2009 Third Ave Zinfandel - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (12/4/2011)
Dark ruby red, clear complexion.
Smells of baked red cherries, fresh cracked black pepper, briar patch, and a whiff of ethanol. Medium bodied, juicy core of pepper and cherries. Slight hint of brown spice in the back. Slippery soft tannins and medium level of acidity. 10 second finish that leaves a pleasant cherry finish.

The Navarro Zinfandel just might be the finest red that’s not Pinot I’ve ever had from Navarro, and I’ve been drinking them on a regular basis since 2003.
The Third Ave Zinfandel is a Zin project from Mary Elke. Sourced from Talmage, just east Ukiah near the Buddhist monastary, crushed in Hopland, and named after the location of her home in Napa, and sold up at her tasting room in Anderson Valley (just felt the need to throw that out there, it’s quite humorous to me to connect the dots on the backstory of the Zin).
