- 2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon (2/27/2025)
Hey why not age a bottle of Lapierre for 16 years! It’s still in excellent condition, I am just not sure I could identify it as Beaujolais in a blind tasting. It has become an interesting, savory synthesis of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. There’s still red fruit, and it’s accented by slightly green notes, which seems odd from a vintage as ripe as 2009. Then the savory stuff comes in. I could swear I was smelling cumin. I even opened the spice cabinet and grabbed the actual cumin - yep, same thing. There was also an earthy note, reminiscent of one of Hardy Wallace’s Mourvèdre wines. Quite a distinctive palette for a Beaujolais!
Seems to still have plenty of stuffing, so no need to hurry. Just be prepared for something a little offbeat.
Well, I’m not a Beaujolais expert, but bought a bit across the vintage, including this, and stashed in my remote cellar.
A cross of PN and CF, plus savory = appears good to me.
I really like this wine. I know it is a bit of an outlier. I had a magnum about a year or so ago and it was an impressive wine, considering. This will come as no surprise as it paired perfectly with Middle Eastern food.
I only have a mag of this left, but loved the last 750 a year ago. Just had the '09 Foillard Cote du Py last weekend and it’s in a great spot. I bought a variety of Kermit’s Cru Beau producers from '08-'13 and all of the ones I’ve tried have been delicious and with no danger of fading.
I’m deep on 09s. Will start dipping in. Thank you for the note.
Thanks for the note. I also have some bottles left, plus some Foillard Py for an interesting comparison
Done it a couple of times so far and the Foillard came out on top, but it’s been a few years…
