Immediately noticed the significant amount of spritz on the wine. Almost to the point of the sensation of carbonation. Bright candied red fruit. The spritz did not settle over the two hour course of the wine being opened, I even shook the bottle. One drinker thought it was California pinot and I can see the similarity in some ca Pinot due to the candied fruit.
I initially thought the wine was fine, showed clean sweet fruit and a touch of orange rind as long as you can get past the spritz. It tasted a bit like Fourier corbeaux initially due to the flavor profile but the candied flavors really pick up with air in the glass. Then the finish is a bit woody and bitter.
On the positive side, this bottle wasn’t an alcoholic mess than the prior two bottles I’ve had but it wasn’t a particularly good wine regardless. The candied fruit and intense spritz were so distracting.
Picked up the CA Pinot comparison when I tasted this a while back…kind of murky dark fruit with a touch of heat. Not all the way to CA, but maybe halfway there. Also had a similar impression from a 2011 Fourrier GC VV recently.
Had this on Friday along with a host of other great burgundies. It sat well with them though it was much better after 24hrs. Served blind to a group that drink plenty of burgundy, it was impressive. Here are some we had including the 1993 Rousseau Clos de Beze and a 1971 Charles Noellat Richebourg https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bz_pbZnnKBD9dEZMLWVoN284d2c/view?usp=sharing
To celebrate the arrivals of the 2011’s - We opened one of our bottles of 2009 Maison Ilan Charmes Chambertin.
The cork was stained red to the very top and was soft from liquid up the sides of it but it still came out with a satisfying pop. Sniffing it from the bottle there was definite touch of reduction but popped and poured a glass and then let it sit for a few minutes before tasting.
Definitely very ripe red fruits on the nose and some smooth vanilla oak but nothing over the top. No reduction at all after letting it sit.
No spritz and the heat wasn’t over the top for me. A little thin on the palate initially but over the next couple hours it has matured into a nice finish. I agree with others who’ve said the dark fruits are prominent but they were not particularly murky for me, quite bright in fact. The heavier fruit tones are easing now and starting to pick up some more earthy tones. Will save some for tomorrow and may come back and edit.
Overall a very nice wine and my wife absolutely loved it. Happy wife is a happy life. Will let the other bottles sit for a few years and try again as it is still very young.
Just has 2009 Fourrier Gevrey Vv, Combe aux Moines and Cherbaudes over the last few days and each needed 2 or 3 30 second booty shakes to D-gas and expunge reduction. Fwiw
