2009 Château Langoa Barton - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (1/21/2022)
Decanted and fragrant notes of red raspberry, cherry and earthy dried leaves are displayed immediately. I followed this wine over 4 hours and it was delicious throughout but evolved constantly and, to my palate, needed as much air as I could give it to fully express itself. The two hour mark seemed to be a great spot for this wine. The nose remained fragrant throughout and evolved into a delightful smoldering red fruits and earthy barnyard aromas. As the acid settled over the hours, wonderful notes of red raspberries shine on the palate only to be followed by flavorful black currants and blackberry. Gentle minerality and soft leather on the mouthfeel. Alcohol level on the bottle read 13% but I’d bet it was at least 14%+. In a complimentary way this is a great bottle to introduce to your “big Napa Cab lover” friend who wants to dabble in Bordeaux. An excellent wine tonight it will only improve in the years to come with greater complexity. -
1991 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection - USA, California, Napa Valley (1/21/2022)
Pop-n-pour. Cork fully saturated but just a millimeter short of breaking through the top. Nose was a delicious rustic combination of plums, cherries and barnyard. Initial taste was sweet, jammy thin, kool-aid – not an optimistic start. 20 minutes later this wine rounded into form and was fabulous. Elegant rustic cherry nose. Dark cherry and bramble flavors on the palate. Medium body, smooth, and fully resolved tannins. Enjoyable medium-length finish. Fantastic demonstration of early-1990s Napa Cabernet that I miss.
