‘Prune’ is a descriptor that sometimes evokes thoughts of a wine that is over-ripe and soiled by dead fruit characters but when I use it in this note it is actually a desirable trait. I often see prunes in good Pommard and this wine has real Agen prune smells and tastes (I just wanted to use Agen prunes to make my note sound a bit more high brow and wanky, they’re probably just some basic ‘garden variety’ prunes if the truth be known). The wine is also meaty and sweaty with a little tar, sweet cedar and coal smoke thrown in. It is blocky and chunky with a light vintage derived creaminess. There is real intensity, it’s chewy and has plenty of gristle to the finish.
Cheers
